Definition of Shaft

Shaft
Shaft is a rotating machine element which either receives power, transmit power or both.
Shaft are of circular Cross Section. Shaft may be solid or hollow depending upon the appliction
Shaft may be of two types.
  1. transmission shaft
  2. machine shaft
Shaft and Bearing
Shaft is Rotating machine element. It would be supported in same member.and that member called bearing. Here we have shaft and member inside it is supported. it is called bearing. This shaft would be contact between shaft and bearing. It is with the help of oil film. Because oil is used as a lubricant in the shaft, so here we have oil film. Both shaft and bearing they are made of metal. When the shaft rotate there are chances of metal to metal rubbing, so to avoid that we are lubricating the shaft.
 Shaft may be of circular cross section and that circular cross section may be either solid or it can be hollow.
Shaft Cross section
The material is mostly Steel. It is medium Carbon steel.
When shaft rotate we are providing the torque. so power consume by the shaft or power transmit by the shaft. It can be found by below equation.
P=2兀NT/60
P = Power,
N = Speed of the shaft,
T = Torque of the Shaft.

Type of shaft

  1.  Transmission Shaft
  2. Machine Shaft.

1. Transmission Shaft

They are receives power from one end and deliver power at other end.
Here in this Figure pulley there in the shaft. We have power transmission device. Smaller pulley would be rotate with help of motor. Smaller pulley connected to the bigger pulley with help of belt. When the bigger pulley rotate with help of belt in same direction, so it would transmit power from motor to the shaft. And shaft rotate. On that Shaft  another member which is called gear.so gear also start rotating in same direction. That gear mess with other gear which is rotate in opposite direction. We seen this shaft it is receiving power and transmitting the power.

2.  Machine Shaft

They are an integral part of a machine or also we can say that they are the main member in a machine.
Example : Crank Shaft in I.C. engine.
In I.C. engine Crank Shaft Receiving power from connecting rod. Hence the Crank shaft rotating and once crank shaft started rotate. We can say that power has be transfer.
